What Happens at a Buffet…..
An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle
“I can explain,” Zoe said, swallowing nervously as Trevor set her down on her feet in the foyer.
“Really?” he drawled dangerously low as he kept his gaze locked on her.
“Yes,” she said, simply to buy herself some time as she watched Trevor reach back and shut the door.
“I’m all ears,” he said, startling her when he threw the lock.
“I, ummm,” she said, swallowing nervously as she took a step back, “that is, this isn’t what it looks likes.”
“So, then you’re not betraying me with that little bastard’s girlfriend?” Trevor demanded, not bothering to go after her, which actually kind of frightened her.
Holding up a finger, she said, “Technically, I don’t think they’re dating.”
“I don’t care what they’re technically doing,” he bit out evenly. “I only care about what you’re doing behind my back.”
“Umm, nothing?” she said, casually glancing over her shoulder as she took another step back to make sure that there was nothing blocking her escape if she needed it and judging by the murderous glare on his face, she was going to need it.
“Then you weren’t planning on meeting her at an undisclosed location today?” he asked, pointedly holding up her cellphone in case she tried to deny it.
She shifted more to the right as she took a step back. “I umm, I may have been planning on meeting her for lunch today.”
“Huh?” he murmured thoughtfully as he looked down at her phone and scrolled through her text messages. “If you were only planning on meeting her for lunch then why did you have to be there by nine?”
“So that we could make a well-educated decision on what to order for lunch?” she asked, sounding really hopeful as she took another step back, noting once again that he wasn’t trying to come after her.
“And you needed three hours to do that?” he asked, watching her every move.
Taking another step back, “Yes?”
He leaned back against the front door as he made a show of going through her text messages. “I see…..who else was involved?” he asked in a deceptively calm voice as she stood there, frozen on the spot.
“I-involved in what?” she asked, trying to take another step back, one that would take her into the family room, but her feet wouldn’t listen to her.
“In this betrayal,” he said, still looking down at her phone, but she knew that he wouldn’t find anything. She’d made sure to delete the other text messages this morning just in case-
“Haley sold you out this morning,” he announced, never taking his eyes off the phone as she struggled with the knowledge that Haley had sold her out.
Haley never would have sold her out…..Never!
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” she said firmly, sure that Haley would have taken their secret to the grave.
“She confessed to Jason last night,” he said with a careless shrug.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” she said, shaking her head as she took another step back even as she had to wonder if that was the reason why she hadn’t heard from Haley since yesterday afternoon.
“She’s talking right now,” he said, casually scrolling through her phone.
“There’s nothing to tell?” she said weakly as she took a step back, wondering why she’d let Marybeth talk her into doing this.
Okay, so maybe the idea of screwing over her husband and all of his male relatives for her own joy may have had something to do with it, but she was still going to blame Marybeth for this one.
“You want to tell me why you did it?” he asked, finally looking up at her.
She could have done and said a lot of things to save her ass at that moment, she could have named names, made a run for it or simply denied it, but she didn’t do any of things.
Instead, she opened her mouth and said the one thing that guaranteed her safety.
