Tired: An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle

The content in this Chronicle and on this website is intended for adults, 18 years and older.

Tired

An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle

“No!” Jodi said, stubbornly shaking her head as she released a miserable groan. “I’m fine.”

“Jodi…” Danny said, sighing heavily even as he glanced over his shoulder to check to make sure that his mother had everything she needed to take care of the twins for the day only to find his mother and Sebastian, her helper for the day, sending him the Mocking Jay sign from The Hunger Games and making him groan, because this was going to be a long fucking day.

“I’m fine,” Jodi mumbled with a pathetic whimper as she blindly reached over, grabbed the box of Kleenex, and rolled over on the couch where she continued shivering.

“Yeah, you look fine,” he said, glancing down at the thermometer in his hand that was still flashing a hundred and three. “You need Advil to bring down that fever.”

“No,” the stubborn woman that had actually thought he wouldn’t notice that she was sick, muttered.

“Jodi,” he said, sighing her name heavily as he tossed the thermometer on the coffee table and sat down on the edge of the couch with a wince when his back protested the move. “You’re sick.”

“I’m just tired,” she mumbled into her pillow just as his mother and Sebastian headed towards the door with the twins, leaving him alone with his wife, who was about to make his life a living hell.

“And the fever?” he asked, even as he reluctantly reached for the large bottle of Advil gel caps.

“It’s just warm in here,” she said, sounding absolutely miserable.

“I see,” he murmured, opening the bottle and tipping three pills into his hand.

“I just need a nap and I’ll be fine,” his beautiful wife that he loved more than anything in the world said, as he went over all the things that he was going to have to do once he gave her the pills.

He was going to have to lock all the doors, secure the windows, hide the car keys, set the alarm just in case she tries to sneak out, hide the credit cards just in case she had the urge to buy a thousand dollars of gummy bears off Amazon…again. There was also the cleaning products, his tools, the broom, and the baby formula so that she couldn’t “meal prep” three months worth of bottles.

But, no matter how prepared he thought he was for times like this, she always found a way to do something to terrify him. With that in mind, he rolled her over, pinched her nose and dropped the pills in her mouth when she went to yell at him. As soon as her mouth was closed, he covered it with his hand, sent up a silent prayer, and as soon as she swallowed the pills, he sat back and waited for nightmare to begin.
