The R.L. Mathewson Chronicles:

A Neighbor from Hell Betrayal

“Hey, baby, how are you feeling?” Jason asked, putting the truck into park as he leaned back against the seat.

Cough, “Okay, I guess,” cough, Haley answered, sounding completely miserable.

“Do you want me to bring you anything for lunch?” he asked, not surprised when she rushed to tell him no.

Cough, “No, I don’t want to risk you catching this,” cough.

“I probably caught it already, sweetheart,” he said, shifting in his seat as he watched the black truck drive slowly past the house before quickly speeding off for the third time, no doubt trying to make sure that he wasn’t home.

“Ummm,” she murmured, clearly searching for an excuse to keep him away.

“I can get O’Malley to cover study hall and my lunch shift so that I can swing by the pharmacy and pick up some ginger ale and medicine for you,” he offered, watching as his wife opened the front door and stuck her head outside. He couldn’t help but roll his eyes as he watched while she made sure that the coast was clear before she stepped outside, wearing his old Yankees tee shirt and a pair of flannel pants.

“No, baby, don’t do that,” she said before adding a pathetic cough. “I’m already in bed and really tired. I’m probably just going to sleep for the rest of the day.”

“Okay, sweetheart. Get some sleep and I hope you feel better,” he said, watching as the black truck started up the street, again.

“Thank you,” she said with a pathetic little sniffle even as she waved to the black truck. “I love you.”

“I love you, too,” he said, watching as the black truck pulled into his driveway, confirming his suspicions that his wife, the woman that he loved more than anything, had betrayed him.

*-*-*-*-*

“Perfect,” Haley said with a satisfied sigh as she hit the “play” button for the DVD player and sat back, enjoying the peace and quiet of having the house all to herself.

There were no children running around, demanding her attention or begging her to bake them a treat, or students raising their hands and asking a question that she’d answered only seconds before. Having a day off was a rare treat for her and something that she’d decided that she desperately needed. She hated lying to Jason, but honestly, it was the only way that she could get some time to herself.

After she called in sick this morning, he’d picked the phone up, prepared to call in sick as well so that he could take care of her, but she couldn’t let that happen. She needed him out of the house, not only so that she could enjoy a nice, peaceful day alone, but also because Black Jack’s Pizzeria would have refused to deliver if he was within a ten mile radius of this house.

She hadn’t had their pizza in years, since she’d married Jason, and lately she’d been craving a slice of their deep-dish pizza. It took four phone calls, and an hour on the phone with the manager, apologizing for everything the Bradfords had put their poor delivery boys through, but eventually she’d gotten him to agree to deliver to the house and ignore the fact that the entire neighborhood was on the banned list thanks to Jason and his cousins.

This day was perfect, she thought as she took a small sip of her root beer float, a must when eating Black Jack pizza, before she opened the pizza box and nearly groaned when she smelled the delicious aroma of hamburger, onions mushrooms and freshly baked bread. Sighing in satisfaction, she grabbed a big slice of pizza and-

“You…..betraying bitch!”  Jason hissed, swiping the slice of pizza out of her hand and taking a large bite all while glaring down at her.

“I…I……ummm, this isn’t what it looks like,” she lamely finished as she discretely shifted to the right, hoping that he didn’t see the box of-

“Are those chicken fingers?” he demanded as he reached past her and swiped the box of chicken fingers before she could hide them.

“Yes,” she muttered pathetically as she came to grips with the fact that her quiet day was over.

“I cannot believe that you ordered Black Jack’s pizza without me!” he said, grabbing a chicken tender and taking a big bite before he took a sip of her root beer float.

“Well, I couldn’t exactly order it when you were here,” she pointed out, giving him a smile with the hope that he would calm down and-

“You betrayed me!” he snapped, making her want to roll her eyes at him.

“How exactly did I betray you?” she asked, reaching over to pick up a slice of pizza only to have the box suddenly pulled away from her reach.

“Not only did you lie to me this morning, but then you went and ordered Black Jack’s behind my back!” he said and she didn’t need to ask to know that he considered the Black Jacks delivery to be the biggest betrayal.

“I-,” she started to say only to be cut off.

“This is grounds for divorce, woman!” he said, biting off a large piece of pizza all while he continued to glare at her.

“Uh huh,” she said, pushing her glasses back up her nose, wondering if she should just go ahead and apologize to him when a thought occurred to her. “Wait a minute, why aren’t you at work?”

Just like that his glare was gone and in its place came a wicked smile. “Well,” he said, pausing only long enough to take another bite of pizza before he dropped the slice on a plate and took a quick sip of her float, “after I realized that you were faking your cute little ass off this morning I decided that you were going to need a little company.”

She would have argued the need for company, but at that moment he’d started to unbutton his shirt and pulled it loose from his pants.

“So, after I dropped the kids off at my parent’s house, I ran all the errands so that you wouldn’t have to,” he said, earning her undying love for saving her from a trip to the post office. “When I came home, I saw the Black Jack’s delivery guy circling the neighborhood and knew that you were up to something,” he said, grinning as he pulled her into his arms.

“I knew that I should have double checked with the school to make sure that you were there,” she grumbled as she wrapped her arms around his shoulders and leaned up to meet his lips.

“You need to learn to be a hell of a lot sneakier when you deal with a Bradford,” he reminded her as her mind registered the fingers working the ties of her pants loose.

“I’ll have to remember that,” she said against his lips as his hand slid past the waist of her pants.

“My mom’s going to keep the kids for the night,” he said as he teasingly ran the tip of his finger between her legs.

“I thought she had something to do tonight,” she said, gasping when he slid a finder inside her.

“She did, but once I told her that you were most likely dying from the plague, she decided to keep the kids,” he murmured against her lips as he used his other hand to push her pants down.

“And Grandma?” she asked, deciding that her day off was much better spent in the arms of her husband.

“Is already on her way to Foxwoods for her bridge club’s annual getaway,” he said, before adding, “and Monday is a holiday so…….”

“We have a four day weekend to ourselves,” she said quietly, trying to wrap her mind around the fact that she was about to have four days alone with her husband at home, something they hadn’t had since their fifth anniversary, three years ago. They’d had sex in every room, in every position, pretty much every hour until her father-in-law banged on the front door, demanding proof that they were still alive.

“Mmmmhmmm,” Jason murmured as he took her hand in his and guided it to the large bulge pressing against his pants. “It should be more than enough for you to make up your betrayal to me.”
