The Vacation from Hell

Part III

An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle

This can’t be fucking happening, Trevor told himself, but as he watched his baby girl throw herself across one of the double beds with little Elizabeth joining her as she announced, “We’re sleeping with mommy!” destroying a little more of his soul.

“We’re sleeping with Dad!” Mathew announced as he jumped on the other bed with Joshua and immediately kicked off their shoes and shifted their attention to the remote control and the small flat screen television while Trevor stood there, wondering how everything had gone wrong so quickly.

They were supposed to have a two-bedroom suite with two king sized beds, a queen pullout couch, two full bathrooms, a large living room, and a balcony overlooking the pool. Instead, they’d been given two adjoining rooms with double beds next to the elevators, small bathrooms barely big enough change in, and a view of the back-parking lot. As soon as he’d realized that the hotel had fucked them over, he’d decided to cancel his reservation and go somewhere else, but that’s when the hotel decided to let him know about their cancelation policy and the fact that reservations weren’t guaranteed and that they were allowed to substitute rooms as needed.

“Can we go swimming, Dad?” Jonathan asked from the other room since there wasn’t enough space in this room for everyone.

“Sure,” he said numbly as he shifted his attention to the other room to find his wife curled up on the bed, fast asleep, and still looking exhausted so he added, “Quietly,” with a pointed look back at the younger kids.

Nodding, the kids climbed off the beds and began quietly shoving and glaring at each other as they tore their bags apart looking for their suits and fighting over the bathrooms while he stood there, watching Zoe sleep and wishing that he could join her. But, he needed to watch the kids and hopefully tire them out so that they took pity on them tonight and passed out so that he could-

“Uncle Trevor?” Mikey said, drawing his attention down to the cute little thing wearing the backwards Red Sox baseball cap that he’d been meaning to incinerate.

“Yes?” he asked, reaching over and gently giving one of her ponytails a playful tug, noting the way she shifted nervously as she shot a glance over her shoulder to make sure that no one was listening.

“Is it okay if I go to the hotel store?” she asked, turning her attention back only to shift her glance away with a blush that had him frowning.

“There’s no store, but we’re going to hit Target tonight if you need something,” he explained, already fucking exhausted and ready to call it a night.

“Okay,” she mumbled distractedly as she looked down at the baseball in her hand.

He opened his mouth to ask the kids to hurry up when she cut him off.

“Umm, would it be okay if I asked Aunt Zoe something?” she said, looking hopeful.

“She’s really tired, sweetheart. Is there something I could-”

“I need tampons.”

I am laughing and laughing and laughing.

First, frequent travelers have ALL been screwed over in accommodations, so that frustration feels like a comfy sweater. Second, while plenty of men can handle THAT request without a blink, I hope a certain someone dives out a window … and we get to read about it.

    Thank you.
