Pregnancy Rules: Part II
An R.L Mathewson Chronicle
“I want a divorce,” Haley said, following that up with a firm nod and a glare aimed at the man who’d clearly lost his mind and-
“What are you doing, Haley?” Jason drawled, making Haley go still as she moved to push the blankets he’d piled on top of her after taking her temperature, off her.
Swallowing hard, Haley said, “Nothing?” only to follow that up by clearing her throat and pulling the blankets back over her when her husband narrowed his eyes on the move.
Once he was assured that she wasn’t going to try that again, Jason went back to reading whatever it was that he was reading on his phone while Haley lay there, regretting her decision not to make a run for it when she had the chance. She-
“We’re not getting a cat,” Jason suddenly announced with a glare that dared her to argue.
Unable to help but frown, Haley said, “I don’t want a cat.”
He watched her for another minute before he slowly nodded to himself and went back to glaring down at his phone. Not sure what just happened there, Haley shifted to get more comfortable only to end up biting back a sigh when the move was met with another glare. Grumbling to herself, Haley stopped moving, released a heartfelt sigh and watched as her husband once again went back to staring down at his phone.
Definitely should have waited until after she had the baby before she told him, Haley thought, reaching up to push her glasses back up her nose while she debated her next move, fake her own death or…
That’s all she had at the moment, which admittedly, wasn’t much.
She-
“We need to get you started on prenatal vitamins as soon as possible,” Jason said, scrolling through his phone only to go still at her next words.
“They’re in my bag,” Haley said, watching as he slowly looked up from his phone to glare at her while she did her best to appear innocent, mostly because she was lying.
Normally, she wouldn’t lie to her husband, but then again, he really didn’t leave her with much of a choice. Not after he fluffed her pillows. She just needed a chance to think without having to worry about her husband breaking out the thermometer again. She watched as her husband’s eyes narrowed on her before he slowly nodded, stood up and placed his phone in his pocket before he-
Oh, God…
-quickly made his way over to her and began the five-minute process of tucking her in all over again. When he reached for her pillow, Haley forced herself to remain perfectly still, watching as he fluffed the pillow while he kept his gaze locked on her. When he was done, he shoved the pillow back beneath her head, double-checked that she was properly tucked back in before his gaze slowly shifted to the thermometer he’d left on the nightstand.
She watched as his gaze flickered between her and the thermometer and-
“The bag’s in the truck,” Haley said, hoping that it would be enough to distract him.
After a minute, Jason slowly nodded, double-checked that she was properly tucked in, and once he was assured that she wasn’t going anywhere, mostly by glaring, he made his way to the door. When she heard the front door click open a few seconds later, Haley was shoving the covers off, climbing off the bed and quickly making her way to the bathroom, only to pause halfway there, glance at the door, worry her bottom lip between teeth even as she told herself that she was wasting precious seconds and-
“Damn it!”
-quickly made her way to the bedroom door, down the hallway, and in the kitchen, where she slid to a stop in front of the fridge. Trying not to panic, she grabbed a pint of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream from the freezer, moved to race back the way she came only to release a muttered curse, turn around and grabbed a spoon from the kitchen drawer before turning around and found herself wondering how she’d missed the large man leaning back against the kitchen wall.
“You left your bag at school,” Jason pointed out while Haley stood there, trying not to make any sudden moves
“That’s because you didn’t give me a chance to grab it before your psychotic break,” Haley pointed out as her gaze flickered towards the hallway.
“Fair enough,” Jason drawled as he followed her gaze and-
“Perhaps now would be a good time to go over the rules.”
“Rules?” Haley asked as she glanced back at her husband to find him watching her curiously.
“It’s the only way to preserve what’s left of my sanity,” Jason said, and since that worked for her, Haley slowly nodded.
“I’m listening,” Haley said, gesturing with the spoon for him to continue.
“For the next nine months, I don’t want you to lift a finger,” Jason said as Haley pulled the lid off her ice cream and tossed it on the counter.
“I’m listening,” Haley said, digging into her ice cream.
“I want you to take it easy, get plenty of rest, and let me take care of you,” Jason said while Haley stood there, savoring a bite of the incredibly delicious ice cream as she considered his offer.
“What exactly does that entail?” Haley asked even as she ran the possibilities through her head.
“Seeing to your every need,” Jason said as Haley took another bite of ice cream.
“Breakfast in bed?” she asked, watching him closely.
“Every morning.”
“Backrubs?”
“Absolutely.”
“And if I have a craving at two in the morning?” Haley asked around her spoon.
“You’ll have it in thirty minutes or less,” Jason said with absolutely no hesitation, and since that worked for her, Haley nodded as she took another bite of ice cream.
“I suppose we could do that,” she said with a satisfied sigh as she headed back to their bedroom, deciding that this would be a good time to get started on those backrubs.
