A Bradford Christmas
Part II
An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle
“I hope you choke on it, bitch!” one of Lucifer’s cousins said, she wasn’t exactly sure which one, as he took down another unnamed relative while Rebecca sat there, popping a Hershey Kiss in her mouth, debating if she should tell them that she spotted another tray of cupcakes in the fridge when the painfully familiar sigh came.
“What did you do now?” her husband asked as he joined her on the couch just as his cousin used a chokehold that actually impressed her and-
“You mean bastard!”
“Nothing,” Rebecca murmured absently as she grabbed another Hershey kiss from the bag that she’d helped herself to.
“I see,” Lucifer said as her attention shifted to Mikey, who was carrying a baseball glove in one hand and dragging Sebastian behind her with the other and-
“Oh, come on!” Mikey groaned when Lucifer reached over and plucked the baseball out of her glove.
“No,” Lucifer simply said as he tossed the ball on the couch next to them.
“But I won’t throw a fast ball. I swear!” Mikey said, tossing her glove at Sebastian’s head so that she could place her hands together in a pleading gesture.
When Lucifer continued to sit there, glaring at his niece, Mikey went for a hopeful smile and when that didn’t work, she shifted to a pout, a sniffle that impressed Rebecca, and then finally…
“Look, I didn’t want to have to do this,” Mikey said with a sad shake of her head before adding, “but you’ve really left me with no choice,” with a heavy sigh and-
“You’re standing under the mistletoe,” Lucifer pointed out, cutting off whatever she was about to say.
“I see,” Mikey murmured with a thoughtful expression on her face as she shifted her attention to the ceiling where someone had placed a large mistletoe as Rebecca’s attention shifted to Sebastian as the boy that was way too damn serious for a kid followed his best friend’s gaze to the ceiling and-
“What did we talk about?” came Reese’s demand even as he picked up his little girl and gave her a kiss on the cheek before he threw her over his shoulder.
“Not to get caught?” came Mikey’s reply as Reese grabbed hold of the back of Sebastian’s shirt and headed back towards the kitchen with a heavy sigh as Rebecca sat there, sighing with disappointment as she reluctantly shifted her attention back to the cousins fighting over what she may have inadvertently led them to believe was the last cupcake.
“Everything okay?” Lucifer asked as he wrapped his arm around her.
“Everything’s fine,” Rebecca reassured him as she did her best not to think about Melanie since she’d promised herself that she wouldn’t worry about her tonight.
“She’s fine,” Lucifer said, reading her mind.
“I know,” Rebecca lied, because she wasn’t really sure about that anymore, not after the other day when Melanie came close to losing the baby.
“The doctor said the baby was going to be fine,” he reminded her.
“Her doctor’s an idiot,” Rebecca pointed out with a heavy sigh as she tossed another Hershey kiss in her mouth.
That was matched with a heavy sigh and a, “I don’t understand why she won’t let my father or Aidan take a look at her,” making her bite back a wince.
“Yeah, me neither,” Rebecca murmured, popping another Hershey kiss in her mouth, trying not to think about how that was going to end when he found out that Melanie was-
“I’m in love with you,” Lucifer said, taking her by surprise mostly because she thought they’d established that already.
“I gathered that when you kidnapped me and dragged me in front of a terrified Justice of the peace,” she said, nodding solemnly.
There was a heavy sigh and a muttered, “Why do you have to make everything so damn difficult?” as he took her hand in his and stood up, leaving her with no other choice but to go with him.
“Because it’s what I do,” Rebecca said absently as Lucifer plucked the bag of candy out of her hand and tossed it on the couch before pulling her into his arms.
“You really are a pain in my ass,” Lucifer said, softening his words with a kiss even as she had to admit that she couldn’t really argue that point, mostly because it was true.
Still…
She opened her mouth to…to…
“Oh, my god,” Rebecca mumbled weakly as she watched her husband slowly go down on one knee before her as he pulled a small black box out of his pocket and opened it, revealing a beautiful emerald encrusted diamond ring.
“I am head over heels in love with you, Rebecca, and I want to spend the rest of my life with you. Will you marry me?” he asked, and this time when she opened her mouth a broken sob escaped so she settled for nodding as the man that she loved more than anything smiled as he stood up and wrapped his arms around her.
“We’re already married,” she pointed out, unable to help but smile as she reached up and cupped his face in her hands so that she could kiss him.
“Is that a yes?” he asked, brushing his lips against hers.
“That’s definitely a yes.”
