The Great Lockdown of 2020

Part III

An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle

“I don’t want to talk about it,” Mikey said before he got a chance to say anything.

“It wasn’t that bad,” Sebastian said even though he had to admit that it had actually been pretty terrifying.

It probably wouldn’t have been that bad if she hadn’t made any sudden moves. Not that he could blame her, because he really couldn’t, not when his siblings had ignored the screams for mercy and moved in for the kill. Then again, if she’d just given up her hold on the bowl, none of this would have ever happened.

“I think it would be for the best if we went our separate ways,” the girl that seemed to live to torment him said with a sad little sniffle as she pointedly looked away from him.

“I think that would be for the best,” Sebastian said, nodding as he carefully straddled the roof so that he was sitting next to her.

“Will you still give me a neighborly wave hello when you see me outside?” she asked with another sniffle as he reached over and grabbed hold of the bottom of her shirt just in case.

“No,” he said, glancing down to the next roof below to find their fathers standing there, glaring up at them.

“That’s fair,” she murmured sadly.

“You know they’re going to kill us, right?” he asked as his father mouthed the words that he felt it was best to pretend that he didn’t know the meanings to.

“I mean, probably not me since I’m a Daddy’s girl,” Mikey pointed out, making his lips twitch.

That is until he saw who was waiting on the lawn below.

“How about your mom?” he couldn’t help but ask as he took in the really angry pregnant woman below.

“Oh, she’ll definitely kill me,” Mikey said, turning her head to follow his gaze below and-

“Oh, that’s unfortunate,” she murmured when she caught the murderous glare aimed in her direction.

“It really is,” he said, because he was really going to miss her.

Licking her lips nervously, she pointed a damning finger at his brothers and sister below. “They tried to eat me!”

There was a gasp of outrage from below and then a, “You wouldn’t let go of the bowl!”

“Mikey,” was all her mother had to say to have her clearing her throat and murmuring, “Remember me fondly,” as she shifted to move back towards the edge of the roof.

“To be honest, I’ll probably forget about you as soon as I get bored,” Sebastian said, tightening his hold on her shirt as he carefully got to his feet.

“That’s to be expected,” Mikey murmured, nodding in agreement as she reached back and took his hand in hers.

“Who was the food for?” he asked as they carefully made their way down to the ledge.

“You,” she said as they grabbed hold of the chimney and knelt down so that they could slide down to the roof and climb down.

“Why?” he asked, reaching over to turn her baseball cap around so that the cap wasn’t in her way.

“Because they said that we were on quarantine and I know how much you hate being stuck inside so I was hoping it would help,” she said, shrugging as his lips pulled up into a pleased smile.

“Aw, you do care,” he said, chuckling as he tweaked her nose.

“A little bit,” Mikey admitted as her lips pulled up into a teasing smile that did funny things to his stomach.

“More than a little,” he said as his gaze locked on that smile and-

“Wait! No!” she cried out seconds before she was suddenly yanked out of sight.

“Mikey!” he yelled as he leaned over to grab her only to wince in sympathy when he watched Uncle Reese carry her down the rest of the way.

“Social distancing!” she sort of screamed as Uncle Reese dropped back down to the roof below and-

“Here,” Reese said as he tossed her to Sebastian’s father so that he could drop down to the ledge below.

When his father dropped her over to Reese below, Sebastian decided that now might be a good time to make himself scarce. Unfortunately for him, his father decided that it was time to see if he could make it up the chimney before Sebastian could make a run for it.
