“Let go.”
“I’d rather die!” Elizabeth bit out vehemently as her grip tightened around the edge of the bathroom counter.
Thankful that she was ticklish like her mother, Jason simply shifted his hand so that his fingertips were near the side of his little girl’s stomach and-
“Oh, my God, no!” Elizabeth gasped around a bout of laughter as she released her hold on the counter so that she could stop his tickling assault.
Once she was free, he simply picked her up and threw her over his shoulder. Ignoring her sputtered demands that he put her down so that she could live out the rest of her life in seclusion, he headed for the front door.
“No, Dad, you don’t understand,” she argued when he opened his truck door and tossed her inside.
“Then explain it to me,” Jason said as he debated his next move.
If she’d been one of the boys, he’d would have simply taken her out to a buffet and let her eat until she felt like talking, but with his baby girl…
It was tricky.
“I-I can’t leave the house,” she mumbled as she ducked down in her seat.
“Why is that exactly?” he asked as he reached over and buckled her in.
Licking her lips nervously, she shook her head with a, “You wouldn’t understand.”
“How can you be so sure?” he asked as he pulled out of the driveway and headed for the gas station down the street.
“Lucky guess,” she said, throwing him a nervous glance. “Where are we going?”
“Store,” he said, deciding that he could definitely go for a few gas station hot dogs to get him through whatever was going on.
“T-That’s not going to work for me,” Elizabeth mumbled absently as she risked a peek out her window only to immediately duck back down in her seat with a groan.
“Then what will work for you?” he asked, already turning around, deciding to see if he could find something that would work for her over by the park.
“Waiting for Uncle Trevor?”
“I see,” he bit out coldly with a glare aimed at his baby girl.
“So, we’ll go home and wait for Uncle Trevor?” Elizabeth asked, sounding hopeful.
“No,” he said evenly.
“Oh,” she mumbled sadly.
“Any chance that you’re going to tell me what’s going on?” he asked as he parked in front of the pharmacy.
“I don’t think that’s a good idea,” she said, swallowing nervously as she risked another peek out the window only to sigh with relief when she spotted the pharmacy.
“And why’s that?” he asked, barely finished putting the truck in park before Elizabeth released her seatbelt, swiped his wallet, grabbed two twenties, tossed it back to him, and jumped out of the truck with a, “I’ll be right back!” and quickly disappeared in the pharmacy, leaving him sitting there, debating his next-
“Hey, Dad,” Cole said as he climbed in and settled back in Elizabeth’s recently abandoned seat with a sigh.
Frowning, Jason asked, “Where the hell did you come from?” even as he noted the specks of mud on his son’s clothes, the scrapes on the backs of his knuckles and-
“Let go!” Mikey snapped, drawing his attention to find Sebastian carrying a mud-covered Mikey towards his truck.
“Not happening,” Sebastian said calmly as he gestured for Cole to move over.
Without a word, Cole moved over even as he reached over and helped his cousin drag Mikey, who was doing everything in her power to break free, inside. When Mikey managed to break free, Jason released a curse and reached past his son so that he could grab hold of the wiggling mess and pull her inside.
“Well, that was fun,” Sebastian said dryly as he sat back with a sigh.
“I told you not to let her go,” Cole said, reaching to take Mikey, who’d stopped wiggling so that she could fold her arms over her chest with a stubborn glare, only to have Sebastian beat him to it.
“I thought she was done,” Sebastian said, settling a fuming Mikey on his lap while Jason sat there, wondering what the hell just happened.
“You thought wrong,” Cole said with a sad shake of his head as Jason glanced around, looking for the source of Mikey’s temper only to mutter, “Oh, shit,” when he spotted the teenage boy covered from head to toe in mud, limping towards the store only to visibly startle when he spotted Mikey.
Her eyes had barely narrowed when the boys released matching curses, reached for her and barely managed to keep a hold on her when she threw the door open and tried to go after the kid. When he realized that Mikey wasn’t going anywhere, he yelled, “You throw like a girl!” around a loud sob, which was immediately followed by a hysterical squeal when Mikey broke loose and-
“Damn it!” Sebastian snapped as he went after his best friend.
Cole was right behind him, releasing several curses that Jason would worry about later as he sat there, watching in disbelief as Mikey threw herself at the kid who hadn’t moved fast enough, taking him to the ground and-
“Oh, shit!” Jason snapped as he threw his door open and moved his ass, praying that the boys struggled to stop Mikey from shoving that large handful of mud in the kid’s face only to cringe in sympathy as Mikey put every Bradford boy to shame and made a kid twice her size scream for his mommy.
