Daddy’s Little Girl
Part III
An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle
“What the hell happened?” Jason asked when Mikey finally stepped out of the bathroom.
With a heavy sigh, she said, “I’m afraid that I can’t tell you that.”
“Well, did you at least fix her?” he asked right around the time the sniffles started up again.
“Define fix…” Mikey said as she rolled the baseball between her hands.
“This,” Jason said, gesturing between Mikey and the closed bathroom door, “is exactly why I don’t want you playing with my children.”
With a thoughtful nod and a shrug, she said, “Fair enough.”
He narrowed his eyes on his favorite niece, not that he would ever admit that he had a favorite, because that would just be wrong, and asked, “Did you at least find out what happened?”
“Yes, yes, I did,” she said, grabbing her bag and tossed it over her shoulder.
“Well, then what happened?” he asked, watching as she headed towards the front door.
“Don’t worry about it. I’ve got it handled,” Mikey said over her shoulder as she left.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
“God only knows,” Sebastian said with a heavy sigh as he got up and headed after his best friend, leaving Jason standing there, feeling completely fucking useless and-
Sniffle.
“Daddy?”
“Yes, sweetheart?” he asked, moving to open the door only to let his hand drop away, not sure what he was supposed to do.
Sniffle.
“Is Mom here?”
“No,” he said weakly as he rubbed his hands roughly down his face.
There was a pause and then, “D-Do you know if Aunt Zoe is home?”
“I think she’s picking Jonathan up from school,” he said, sighing.
“Aunt Kasey?”
“Doctor’s appointment.”
“Great Grandma?”
“Bingo,” he said, glancing back at the closed in-law apartment door as he debated going to pick her up early, but since that hadn’t ended well the last time he came between her and Bingo…
“Grandma?”
“Visiting Reed and Joey.”
“Uncle Trevor?” she asked, making him glare.
“At work,” he bit out, beyond fucking insulted.
“Oh,” came the disappointed sigh that had Jason deciding that he’d had enough.
