Daddy’s Little Girl
Part I
An R.L. Mathewson Chronicle
“I’m getting too fucking old for this,” Jason said, sighing as he rubbed his hands roughly down his face as he sat there, trying to find the energy to drag his ass inside.
Knowing that his little grasshopper was inside waiting for him had him grabbing his backpack and shoving his truck door open. He was taking next summer off, he decided as he grabbed the small cooler that Hayley packed for him this morning out of the back and headed for the front door. He’d been working for his father every summer since he turned fourteen and now that the kids were older and they finally had some money in the bank and another baby on the way, he planned on taking it easy and enjoying some time with his family.
Until then, he was going to have to enjoy the little things like a homecooked meal, a hot shower, and spending the rest of the night in the pool with his wife, he thought as he walked into the kitchen and-
“That better not be my dinner,” he said, dropping his bag by the door.
“It is,” Cole said with a shrug as he finished off the last bite of spaghetti before dropping the fork on the plate and returning his attention the phone in his hands.
“I see,” Jason murmured, wondering how pissed his wife would be if he-
“Mom ran out to get you something else for dinner,” Cole explained as he shifted his attention to the bowl of fruit next to him.
“And why did she have to do that?” Jason asked, pulling his keys out of his pocket and dropped them on the counter.
“Because I cried,” Cole said as he selected a large apple and took a bite.
“You cried?” Jason asked, feeling his lips twitch.
Nodding, Cole said, “I did what was necessary.”
Chuckling, Jason headed for the fridge. “And you feel no shame in that?”
“None whatsoever.”
“Where’s your brother and sister?” Jason asked as he grabbed an ice-cold Coke from the refrigerator.
“Joshua went with Mom to the store and Elizabeth is in the living room staring down at her phone and struggling not to cry,” Cole explained, making him frown.
“Your sister’s crying?” Jason asked, already heading for the living room.
“Probably.”
“Then what the hell are you doing in here?”
“Debating how I’m going to handle this,” Cole calmly explained with a thoughtful look on his face that had Jason pausing by the kitchen door.
“Handle what?”
“Nothing,” Cole murmured with a sad shake of his head as he took one last bite of his apple before sending Jason a wink and heading for the front door.
Definitely too fucking old for this shit, Jason decided as he pushed the door open and walked into the living room to find his little girl sitting on the couch wearing the saddest expression that he’d ever seen on her beautiful little face. Then she looked up and her beautiful baby blue eyes filled with tears as her bottom lip began quivering as she mumbled, “Daddy,” seconds before she threw herself in his arms.
I had horrible day, epileptic seizures, and had been feeling sorry for myself all afternoon. My husband knows how much I love the Neighbors From Hell series and the Bradfords are my favorite fictional family so in the email came the Chronicles my husband showed it to me he said that on the bed and he pulled it up on my phone and he read it out loud to me thank you I really needed this today.
